Above: Fred, the manager of Maranatha’s chicken project, and thousands of his hens’ eggs
Maranatha began raising chickens for egg production back in March, after much planning. The goals of the chicken project are threefold: to provide a more nutritious diet for Maranatha’s students, to provide practical training in egg production for Maranatha’s vocational students, and to generate income for the organization.
One of my primary objectives while here is to work with Patrick and Fred to establish good management practices, evaluate the market and viability of egg production, and ultimately help them achieve profitability. Luckily, I have many resources surrounding me because I know even less about chickens than I did about procuring bricks in Uganda before I got here.
Below: Fred tends to the chickens to make sure they have enough water and feed

First and foremost, the evaluation of the operations is being guided by Paul Helgeson of the Egg Module (http://www.eggmodule.org). Paul has extensive experience with chickens and has designed a franchise model for implementing for-profit small-scale egg production in less-developed rural areas. His tools have been invaluable for analyzing the business. Also, I am being helped by Paul Lemieux, who has a doctorate in animal science and has met Fred and Patrick previously in his capacity as a member of KidsUganda, a non-profit based in Lake Bluff, IL. The third pillar has turned out to be Ugachick, Uganda’s leading poultry producer.
Yesterday, Patrick, Fred, Patrick’s wife Eva, Patrick’s daughter Catherine, and I had the opportunity to visit Ugachick. Ugachick employs 200 people and produces and sells feed, processed chicken, and day-old chicks. The company supplied Maranatha with their first batch of 1600 chicks 4 months ago. Fortunately, the Managing Director (who owns a majority stake in the company) is Patrick’s brother-in-law. For three hours, we had a private audience with him and his chief veterinary doctor. In addition to providing us with an overview of the industry in Uganda and the background of the company, they gave Fred specific technical recommendations for managing Maranatha’s flock.
It was wonderful to have the opportunity to sit in on a conversation where Ugandans were training other Ugandans, as well as a naïve American, about egg production. Currently, the project is not profitable, but we are confident that with the help of so many partners, we can achieve profitability and attain all three project objectives.
The Managing Director, Aga Sekalala, is in the center of the picture below. You can tell by the way he is dressed that he has his hands in every level of the business!

Dan,
Great post about Ugachick. I hope things are improving on the ground. Let me know how else I can help.
Paul

Hello prospective investors,
A number of people are interested in starting commercial chicken rearing; I’ll give my free advice on a few issues and my experience for the last 1 year in the industry.
Like all business opportunities, An exhaustive plan and investigation of other farmers’ experience is required before you invest yr savings/loan; but since many of u have made up yr minds to launch whatever the outcome I ‘ll just list down a few requirements and how to go around them.
First you’ll need a chicken hse, depending on the numbers you want to start out with. e.g 500chicks need space of abt 10meters by 4m. Square; then the materials needed to construct the hse that may be made from simple mud and raw bricks to wooden structure to the more semi permanent structure of burnt bricks and lime/cement mixture. (My chicken barn constructed from burnt brick/cement cost me abt 4million ug shs. Inclusive of roofing with the lowest gauge of mabati 30″ and used coconut tree poles in place of timber for holding mabati. The Barn houses 1000 chicks at ago)
The above initial investment being the hardest sacrifice (it wiped out most of my capital!), however if you succeed thru this stage the next item to purchase are the equipments needed on the farm like 200litre drum for clean water, drinkers, feeding troughs, power source (i use an old lorry 240volts battery and some paraffin lanterns as my site doesn’t have Umeme). U’ll have to get a dog too (Yes! thieves funny neighbours).
As you get close to ordering for your day old chicks (most cost between 1300shs to 1500shs depending on where you are buying from) remember to buy disinfectants, vaccines & feeds a week earlier before arrival of birds
Employ hard working assistants (u may not have money to get an experienced chicken keeper but you can read manuals and train someone willing cheaply) Prevention is better than cure; so ensure that immediately the birds arrive at the farm, maximum hygiene and regular vaccination against common diseases like coccidiosis, Newcastle ,ticks etc.
Broiler chicken when properly feed take two months to mature /ready for sale, while layers take five months to keep before they can start laying eggs. The financial cost of feeding, lighting, paying wages, water etc sh’ld be weighed before you embark on rearing either one of the stocks. (Factory mixed feeds cost approx. 45,000shs for 70kg bag and both varieties of birds can each eat about 5kg of feeds in two months! )
Yes it’s a tough job, and involves a lot of financial sacrifices (talk to yr bankers if impossible try the small micro-finance banks, they understand small income generating business better; personally I use FINCA , no security just constant visits every months from loan officers for a 4million loan acquired for 8months).
Marketing of mature birds or eggs laid is the easier part; U literally have clients running to you (depending on where the farm is located) currently prices range from 6,500shs to 7,500shs for broilers and 5000shs to 6,000shs for a tray of eggs. So do your calculations before you leap into our world of commercial chicken rearing.
I have never regretted my decision and I am happy to reveal that our farm was chosen as one of the model farms by NAADS and we are eligible to receive free broiler stock of 300 birds plus feeds this Sept-2009.
For more information contact me by email kitrobert@live.com; I ‘ll willing share more information with U
Wish u luck
Robert kitara

Wow am I literally the only reply to your great read?!?
In addition to this many have succeeded through poultry, I have also constructed a shelter for layers which has cost me a lot of money. However, it can accomodate 5000 layers so far I have 600 layers whereby 100 have started laying and the 500 are one month old. I would wish to attain the whole shelter with more 4500 chicks but I don’t have the funds to do sowhoever can help me out and I pay afterwards would be most welcome. Thax

hi??
i have learnt alot from what you do,am from kenya and more so from kenchic company where i work as a manager,i wanted to request you if there is a vacant position in your company so that i can broaden my knowledge all over africa about chicken.
is kirago still with you there??/
Dear Farmers, Im very happy about your questions. Poultry farming is a lucrative business when you dedicate your self in it. It requires constant seeking of knowledge and sharing of experience. The success of your business in poultry farming will solely depend on the way you give attention to your birds. You will never reap enough when you are a telephone farmer. Further more the brooding period (Day 1 to 3weeks) is very critical and alot of attention to details have to be paid.
There is positive correlation in performance of birds(whether layers or broilers with the way the brooding period was managed) I would advice you to seek sufficient technical information on general poultry management from Ugachick Extension staff before you start rearing your poultry.
In brief ;Brooder management, Nutrition, Vaccination, Biosecurity measures are some key issues to be taken with curiosity.
Hope to have served you with some essential and vital information.
Best regards Emmy K (+256772658734)

Subject: Brief reply to your Inquiries.
Stocking rate for commercial layers is 5-6birds/square meter
Stocking rate for commercial broilers 11-13birds per square meter.(reply for sam nkera,Dan from Kenya)
Cost calculations are made on special request depending on your lacation and the type of locally available materials you prefer to use.( T0 all poultry farmers)
In the tropics, Biosecurity. vaccination, house design, nutrition, and modern management practices are essential in poultry farming for the birds to potray their genetic potentials.( to all poultry farmers)
We dont sell hatching eggs( reply for james)
1300/=per chick for broilers and 2500/= per chick for layer(reply for Kizito Badru)
Hope i have served you with this brief advice
Best regards Emmy(0772658734)
I want to start breeding for myself where can I get good parent stock for layers and broillers?
helo,
wanted to inquire the prices of feeds, broilers and layers coz i have 4 long wanted to invest in a long term project which would earm me some personal income, then the other question is is it true that u do have branches up-country that is in northern uganda.
helo, this is kenneth from Gulu can the mgt/concerned persons tell us more about the delivery services up country and the cost of transportation for fear of the birds dying
Dear Flavia; There is no fixed prices for poultry feeds, Factors like availability/ scarcity of raw materials do trigger seasonal changes of poultry feed prices, factory prices are also different from the out let/ agent prices, distance from kampala to where a farmer is located also changes the price ( Transportation cost) accordingly.
Dear Kenenth/ kevin. We have never had any compaign due to transportation. Akony Kori based in Lira has been our business partner and have been successfully transporting chicks and feeds to Lira. I believe it is almost same distance when other factors are kept constant. Extension/ advisory services are possible. Just get into the business.
Thanks.
hellow how are you?
I would like to purchase from you layers and broillers so would you please tell me the prices for each of them from Uganda to Dar es salaam airport Tanzania including the transport charges.

am ugandan aged 29, i stay in kitoro ebbs and i would ilke 2 be helped. i need to start apoultry buss but i need some idears
Dear Ssenpebwa Livingstone.
It is a good idea to seek information before you start your poultry business. Just go to old kampala plot 1 next to police station and get intouch with Ugachick extention officer at Chicken house and you will be helped.
Hullo Emmy thank you for the good work.
Please help out on this..
I need to start Egg layers as a business..i have some experience with Broilers but not layers as such…
I wanted to start with 3,000 birds…
Whats the cost per bird?,Whats the feeding cost per bird per week? how long do they take to start laying? whats the maximum a bird can lay per day and for how many weeks/months does it take before turning into Off layer?
how much space does a bird need? can i build the shelter going up (say 3 floors to maximize on the space i have?)
i have so many questions but please help with those when you get some free time…thanks
Patrick
Dear Patrict.
Your questions are good.
At the moment good quality day old chicks are at 2400/=.
-Feeds: Chick mash 2.5 kg per chick for the first 8 weeks
: Growers mash 7-8 kg per chick from 8 weeks to point of lay.
-Age to start laying varies, but with good management, it is 18-19 weeks when body weight is achieved and the frame size.
-Laying can be 12-13 weeks from point of lay up to when you decide to offlay your birds.
-01 egg is laid per bird per day.
- a good layer can lay up to 320 eggs in her production life.
- Space requirement is 5-6 birds per square metre.
-Building up stair is good but must be done by a professional builder. Mark you ventilation is very important.
Hope i have answered some of your questions.
I have just read the above after picking interest in going into poultry but most of my questions have been answered. However i have a Garage attached to my residential house measuring 15 -20 ft. How many broilers can it accommodate? Is it advisable to keep birds under the same roof with human beings?
Kibalama Charles.
Hey Dan, have read on the comments and are really interesting. THX 4 all that nice work.
Dear Kibalama Charles. In the tropics the standard stocking density for commercial broilers is 11-13 birds per sq metre. However you garage may not provide enough ventilation and or airation for the birds. i would professionally advice you to have a simple structure with open side walls but not the garage. The size of the unit/pen will depend on the number of birds you will intend to stock.
thax for the greater opportunity u bring to us ,i want to start project with 500 layers .what would be the size of housing ,how much achick coasts and how much should i prepare for that project i ill be great ful to c u reply thax

Hi shaka, I would like to ask you on how I can make my visit in your farm?,I’m a citizen from the United Republic of Tanzania, please make it happen.
i am in kenya, doing charcoal briquettes which are used in chickenn rearing during the initial stages and am looking for large farms where i can sign contracts with them our current capacity is 300 bags of 50 kgs per day thanks
Dr Joyce. Most big poultry farms are focusing at the use of gas during brooding. NOW you are encouraging environmental degradation. 300 bags x 50 kg =15000kg per day.
15000 x30 days=450,000kg per month
450,000 x 12= 5,400,000kg per year.
Now my question to you is, how many trees( seedlings) are you planting per day/ per week for environmetal sustainability?.
Lets be environmentally friendly. Do not just look at the cash you are earning from your charcoal business.
Thanks
Dear Emmy Kewber,
Thanks for the great advice you are providing for these potential farmers. I just have one question for you.
You have talked of using gas during brooding and i have picked interest in that as am in final stages of constructing my poultry house for 3000 layers but i dont have elctricity in the area where iam to start this project.
How is gas used in this case?
You answer will go along way to help me sort out this power thing.
Please you can also email me on butuwajr@yahoo.com for any details.
Thanks very much and my kind regards to you
Charles
